Marie, . . . you would probably be better off looking for alternatives to dye, . . .

Depending on the "color" you want, . . . strong brewed coffee can make a nice brown, . . . vinegaroon does one of the best blacks available.

There are alternatives.

Stop at a Tandy store, . . . some of their water base stuff is pretty light on aroma.

Tandy Pro-waterstain is what you're after. They might have a very faint odor, but nothing offensive.
