A friend of mine is asking me where he could find mink oil to apply to floggers as a conditioner. Before I point him in any particular direction, is there something better he should use, or is mink oil just as good as anything else (cod liver, neatsfoot, etc)?

Schno, it depends on the type of leather the floggers are made of. Old saddlemakers used to use unsalted butter as a finish! I just find it very hard to spend a lot of time making a project and then putting on anything natural like olive oil or butter or anything that can turn rancid. Mink oil, neatsfoot oil, Fiebing's Aussie conditioner are all good as are any of the products from Bee Natural.

Hi Schno,

Montana Pitchblend has an oil that is Mink Oil and Pine Pitch. The paste has beeswax added in. Pine Pitch is to some extent antimicrobial as is beeswax. I have also used Pecard's conditioner for years with excellent results. I can also recommend the Bee Natural Saddle Oil with anti-fungal additives. With the Montana Pitchbend Paste and the Pecard's, you can get little 1/2 oz paks that you can give or sell to your customer for maintenance.

I would recommend anything but mink oil..........also known as stink oil.

Depending upon what kind of leather it is made from I have used extra virgin olive oil on alot of stuff. Sparingly.

But that's just me.

I found some Feibing's mink oil at a local tack shop, I used it and think it works particularly well. However, I don't find the smell offensive, rather a bit sweet. I'm not sure what smell folks are talking about. All I know is ANTS LOVE IT!!!.
