LoneWolf1973 Report post Posted April 20, 2015 I had a friend contact me and was wondering if I could make her husband a holster for a 1911 and how much. I told her I will get back with her after I do some research when we are done with the vet reunion this weekend. What I was wanting is some opinions as I have never done this sort of project. For one, is it a big pain in the a$$ to make? I love challenges but don't know if this is a challenge or a headache. Also, if I can get some advice on making one if I do it. She is supposed to send me some pics of the gun and what she wants on it. I am supposed to get with our commander Friday at the reunion to check measurements on the 1911 he has. camano ridge Report post Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) LoneWolf some people start out making a holster as their first project. Looking at your facebook page it looks like you have a several projects under your belt and have some good basic skills. You should be able to make a holster. There will be a learning curve just in terminology and getting exactly what the customer wants. You will need to know make and model of the 1911. Also you will need the gun or a holster mold. I have sent you a PM Edited April 20, 2015 by camano ridge
byggyns Report post Posted April 22, 2015 (edited) My first leather project was a holster for my own 1911 pistol. I did it at a class at my local Tandy shop. There are tons of pre-existing patterns to choose from, or you can design your own- depending on what he wants. I designed my own in the class & have since designed and built holsters for my other pistols. The section of this forum on holsters offers tons of information, patterns, tips, etc. Camano was exactly correct that you will need the pistol or the correct dummy gun to properly mold the holster. (SIG Sauer slides are very different from the standard government specs, different frames are out there that have accessory rails, different length of the slides / frames: long, govt, commander, defender) The other option would be a loose fitting military flap holster. There are patterns for those available on the forum as well just search M1912 and M1916 to find those. Edited April 22, 2015 by byggyns

Pappys Leather Report post Posted April 28, 2015 Do you have the Al Stolman holster making book? I have made a couple off the pattern for 1911 in the back of the book. Was not that bad. I even made the loop so it would give it a slight angle forward.
LoneWolf1973 Report post Posted April 28, 2015 I currently have no books on holsters. I was waiting till I find out the particular 1911 and what style he wants before I start investing in the patterns.
