Speed Reducer?

Recommended Posts

saw an old industrial for sale on craigslist. I am not interested in the machine but was curious about what appears to be a speed reducer but was not sure since the pulleys don't seem to be the right size. Anyone know about the piece on the right?

That is an external clutch and it *looks* like it may give a very slight overdrive of the motor speed, rather than have a reduction. The motor pulley and clutch input pulley don't look too drastically different in size (a small speed reduction with this pair), but the clutch output pulley is quite a bit larger, and will probably overdrive the heck out of a typical handwheel pulley.

Yep, what DC said.

It was before they figured out they could stuff the clutch into the motor housing. I have several versions of that on some of my older machines. The Singer design was pretty cool. I have a Singer 7 machine that has a bigger version of that. Not OSHA approved, not even close...heh.

Back in the day, when a 1 1/2 hp motor weighed about as much as Silver and half of Trigger, they used a clutch designed after the one on the 1929 La Salle to connect motor to sewing machine wheels and allow smooth operation. Nice thing was, they lasted forever because you could service them. Today, they put all of that in the 30 lb disposable motor.
