25b Report post Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Looks like you punch the two holes to install the two halves of a snap...put the buckle on, fold over and snap closed...sew the large part onto the belt... Edited August 5, 2015 by 25b
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 5, 2015 25b pretty well nailed it. Here is a picture of how I build them with it installed on the main belt piece. After the 2 rivet holes that hold the buckle on it's skived off. Good luck on your project! Josh
Toney Report post Posted August 5, 2015 I was thinking the dotted lines were the stitching ... I was trying yo figure out how it could work with the buckle slot halfway sewed down... Thanks guys think I got this figured out
JLSleather Report post Posted August 5, 2015 Josh.. that doesn't go THROUGH the main belt? I would have thought it would go on thru like a ranger belt.... I gonna go download that patttern, maybe.. Proly easier'n digin one out the mess!
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 6, 2015 (edited) Hey JLS, I run all the rivets through the main belt. The main belt keeper is riveted in place, although you can't see the front of the rivets as they are under the piece that hols the buckle, I think people call it a chap, maybe? Anyway, that's how I do it. I've seen them done lots of different ways, as long as it works, it's good. I about went into why I like this set up but it involves descriptions like "floppy", "rigid" and "firm" in reference to where you buckle a belt and this is a family site After posting this I re-read your question and I think I understand it better now. The billet end does not go through the main belt when you put it on. So, yes, it does go on just like a ranger type belt! All the best, Josh Edited August 6, 2015 by Josh Ashman
JLSleather Report post Posted August 6, 2015 I din't 'git' nuna that, Josh! Did you fold that over the buckle and rivet it (like I generally think of a "chape"), or did you put a slot in the wider belt, and run the "chape" through it? Thought i had a picture of that .. maybe not. HEY.. what pattern is that?
Josh Ashman Report post Posted August 6, 2015 The chape is folded over the buckle and riveted to the main belt with a little bit of stitching around on the far end. I "lifted" the flower and most of the vine from a Tandy pattern they send out with one of their wallet kits. Here's a pic that shows it a little better. Hopefully I made sense this time! Have a great day! Josh
JLSleather Report post Posted August 6, 2015 Got a pic of the underside? I'm trying to look UNDER the buckle. And by "what pattern", I mean the paper pattern in the first post.
Red Bear Haraldsson Report post Posted August 7, 2015 (edited) I think this picture will answer your questions, JLS. On Josh's belt, the chape is only fastened to the belt at the two rivets (that bracket his maker's mark) and the stitch lines. The keeper on the chape is for the billet and the keeper on the gunbelt proper is for the billet end of the gunbelt. The two rivets hiding under the edge of his buckle are just for the buckle. At least, that is how I am seeing Josh's belt. Mine is just a poor copy that I had to finish in time for last month's shoot. And I still don't know how you guys get the little thumbnails in the posts... Edited August 7, 2015 by Red Bear Haraldsson
