How To Prepare A Halter For Possible Rainy Conditions...

Recommended Posts

can anyone reccommend how to finish the flesh/grain side so that the halter does not sustain water damage?

thank you!!

Use something like sno-proof on the flesh side. Use something like a hair dryer or heat gun to slightly warm up the leather, rub the sno-proof into it then go over it again with the heat gun to make it "soak" in.

You can also use things like tan kote or resolene but I find they crack with bending

Encapsulate it in Acrylic. Make sure horse doesn't move so it won't crack. Or, Use Montana Pitchblend, or Pecard's, both paste, not just the MP oil. Leather gets wet, dry it out, preferably NOT in a musty tack room, but in fresh air, under an eve to protect from a lot of sun.
