Moore77 Report post Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) Hi there I m looking to get into leatherworking and I don't know where to start. I'm glad I have found this forum to learn from you folks. I have watch video from Tandys, but I haven't bought any stamping tools yet. What tools should I get to get started? What I would I like to do is something like I bought a tandys the wildlife belt blanks for my wrist brackets. here is what I bought is this craved or was it stamped. I'm sorry I'm just learning at this point. is it only veg tan that you can stamp on or could you also stamp on deer skin for example Edited September 29, 2015 by Moore77
Tugadude Report post Posted September 29, 2015 Veg tan is what folks use for carving and stamping. Other tannages are typically resistant to tooling. They can be branded with a hot iron for logos, etc. That belt was done with a machine, probably a roller, for speed and repeatability/accuracy. Good luck! penguineer Report post Posted September 29, 2015 Hmmmm...terminology..... Generally carving would be what you want to do - transfer a design, cut with a swivel knife then make the whole thing three dimensional using a series of stamps/tools. Does that make sense? What do you understand the terms to mean? The sample you pictured is produced using a roll - the pattern is on a cylinder-shaped thing that gets put into a hand cranked machine. The pattern repeats after about 6" and the process is much like making sausages.(feed it in one end and crank the handle). Rolled or plated patterns are usually more intricate, but lack depth. You see a lot of it on cheap wallets from Thailand(or we do in these parts)..... Cheers!
Moore77 Report post Posted September 29, 2015 ok, can I do this with 3d stamps
midwestislander Report post Posted September 29, 2015 That piece is embossed, either plate or roller. A 3D stamp will do certain parts of a design, but you will not be able to integrate them smoothly into a total design. Check out the forum section on Tooling and Stamping here, as well as do a search on :How do I do That" forum. Just find a picture you like, (learn how to) make a pattern, get some basic tools, (the forums will give you an idea of what to start with, and go for it. electrathon Report post Posted September 29, 2015 ok, can I do this with 3d stamps You can, but it will be less elaborate. There are stamps that have animals, designs, etc. on them. For a beginner, this may be a place to start. Most of us do not end up there though, we start carving. You will get more depth and deminsion to your work that way. Moore77 Report post Posted September 29, 2015 ok what is good start tools to do this kind of work
Tugadude Report post Posted September 29, 2015 Suggest you check for a local Tandy or other leather/craft store. Usually they have very helpful people. They should have books on leathercraft. Art Stohlman has some excellent resource books for learning the craft. As far as tools, a basic swivel knife and some stamping tools will get you started. They are even available at Hobby Lobby. You can invest tons of money, but it is not necessary when learning. Youtube also has free videos describing leather stamping as does the Tandy web page.
