Jspool Report post Posted December 27, 2015 Hi, I'm a newbie at this. I just started a sheath project, and have the pieces cut out of 8-9oz Veg tanned brown leather. The leather won't absorb water wiped or sprayed on it. It just beads up. Should I give it a cleanup with some acetone?
Dwight Report post Posted December 27, 2015 You have apparently purchased a pre-finished product. I'd go back and get some regular veggie tan leather, . . . I've never been highly successful with the prefinished stuff. May God bless, Dwight
NVLeatherWorx Report post Posted December 27, 2015 What Dwight said, this issue screams of being pre-finished leather. There are several versions of veg-tan that are already finished, conditioned, and sealed that can't be used for anything but making a finished product that can not be stamped, carved, etc. and it sounds like whoever sold you this leather didn't bother trying to find out exactly what you were going to use it for. Get some natural veg-tan and you will soon be on your way to creating great works.
Jspool Report post Posted December 27, 2015 Got it from Tandy and they said veg tanned. I did know it was finished brown. Guess I just got a $110 lesson! I just ordered an oak leaf double shoulder. Thanks for the advise
x101airborne Report post Posted December 27, 2015 I was just going to ask the same question. I have some finished black leather that is waxed on the finished side. It wont take water for nothing. I cut a scrap and tried to tool in a Cara Cara design and the cutting took, but that is it. Even a solid "whack" with a heavy mallet on a basket weave stamp yields light stamping. I am new as you and glad to see I am not the only one learning. I honestly was feeling alone there for a while.
Studio-N Report post Posted December 27, 2015 Finished veg is difficult to case but not impossible. You will probably have to soak it so that it absorbs from the back side. The two problems with this is it will take forever to dry and may trap some water (stain) between the leather and the finish. But it will take water (it's water resistant after all but not water proof). you should be able to stamp it after that but it will take a bit of muscle. I doubt you can tool it without beating yourself to death. If you haven't cut off too much, and the evil empire store may take it back minus a premium.
