nategines Report post Posted February 10, 2016 I bought a Singer 45K25 awhile ago and I am just getting around to figuring out how to work it. I am pretty new to leather sewing machines, but I think I am about to get started on a project. I was contemplating trying my hand at sewing with linen cord. I just got a lube pot and now I need to find some tread and needles. I have a few questions.... What linen thread should I buy? Left or Right twist? Where to buy? What kind of lube should I buy? Advantages/Disadvantages What size of needle should I buy?
jimi Report post Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) Hi Nate, i think the needles should be about 21-25 that is what iam using at the moment (when i have time) with T207,T270 bonded nylon thread. i have only done two test runs with the linen thread and it turned out nice, i dilluted some old floorwax with turps then added a small amount of silicone oil and put it through the oil pot and it worked out well. this is the same as using beeswax, melting it down then adding turps "once it is away from the cooker" the linen thread is 18/3 cord the bobbin thread was not run through the wax, just the top thread and a nº 24 needle was used. it is a sticky sort of pull coming through your tension units so i had to back the tension all the way back on the first one then on the second wheel tension just go the half way around it, not the one and a half turn otherwise is resists too much.( at least for me).
