Members Knifeknut Posted December 15, 2008 Members Report Posted December 15, 2008 Hey all! I've done a few knife sheaths now and the latest one was dyed black. I used Tandy's Eco flow alchohol based black dye. Did a total of three coats. Buffed out after drying each time before applying the next. Finished it with satin shene to give it some waterproofing. Here's my issue........the black keeps coming off no matter what I do. I'd like it to stay on the leather not my hands, clothes, knives etc. What am I doing wrong? Should I be finishing with another product? Appreciate the help. Quote
Ambassador Luke Hatley Posted December 15, 2008 Ambassador Report Posted December 15, 2008 "WHAT AM I DOING WRONG" ......NOT USING FIEBINGD BLACK OIL DYE. GET A QUART AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS. NOW YOU STILL HAVE TO BUFF ..... THEN FINISH WITH SUPER SHEEN OR ATOM WAX Quote

Members iwannabeacowboy Posted May 14, 2010 Members Report Posted May 14, 2010 the only black belt i made, i dipped in black oil dye. let dry and buff & buffed & buffed. until no more black rubbed off on the rag. then a coat of neat lac. the only solution I've found for rub off is elbow grease. sometimes I dye dark brown before black, i think it makes for a darker black and more even coloring. charlie Quote
Moderator Johanna Posted May 14, 2010 Moderator Report Posted May 14, 2010 I do like Normow says, dye the leather a blue or green first, then finish off with black Leather Balm with Atom Wax and buff until I'm sick of buffing, then just a little more. Did you guys notice this thread started in Dec 2008? We're still here, having a party! Johanna Quote
Members mugwump Posted May 14, 2010 Members Report Posted May 14, 2010 or you could try using vinegar black/vinegaroon to 'make' the project black in place of the usual dye process... take care, and good luck... Quote
Members mugwump Posted May 14, 2010 Members Report Posted May 14, 2010 i cant believe i replied to a two years old thread again... oh well... all of the info/contents are still relevant... eric Quote
