Question On Dyed Leather Blanks

Recommended Posts

Ok I have made a leather bracelet that I want to offer up for sale but I would like to make a few blanks. But my question is once a piece of leather is died can you actually tool it and have it show up ok? The two pictures are of the style of bracelet that I want to put up for sale, want to give who ever buys one to have two initals put on the bracelet and that is what would need to be tooled into the leather as the Mexican basket weave braid will already be done (same with the hole with the concho.) SO is it possible to tool on leather that is already dyed and then just hit it again with the dye? As I do not want to do the Mexican leather braid then have to dye everything as it will get dye on the braid work. But I do want to save myself some time so I was thinking of making maybe 4 or 5 "blanks" then simply tool the initials on once I get someone that wants to buy it.

Yes you can, but there is a whole list of reasons why I would consider it a bad idea.

1. Resetting the leather to accept stamping/tooling will cause the already dyed colors to bleed.

2. Rewetting will hurt the definition of areas already tooled, and you may need to reburnish the edges.

3. Applying more dye will change the shade of the piece where more dye is added

4. Spirit dyes can harden the leather making stamping/tooling more difficult.

5. You risk accidently dying your decorative center piece.

6. If I were mak I got this piece, I would want to tool and dye the main leather, then seal it so it doesn't bleed onto the wrist and clothing. Then add the decorative stitching and concho.

This isn't a large or expensive piece, I would just make one for yourself or friends with your/their initials. Then you can use that as a representative photo to sell future pieces. That way you can do everything in the correct order at one time.

Thanks for that colt. I do not use spirit dyes but even with the ecoflow antique gels it could change the color easily. Good point about just making a few for friends then just using it as a stock photo
