Hi all,

I was wondering if a holster can be molded after using water base dye or just using oil for a finish. I have read posts were wet molding was performed after dying,, but the posts don't say if the dye is water base or oil base. I am working on my first holster, and using a pattern in the Nov./Dec 2015 Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal.

You can mold before or after dyeing, . . . OR, . . . you can use the dye to wet the leather for molding, . . . effectively turning two separate operations into one, . . . and saving time.

I dip dye everything I do for the most part, . . . and even if I have already molded it, . . . I'll touch up the molding when I dye it.

May God bless,

Dwight, I dip dyed the holster after molding. I do like dip dying vs applying with a brush or rag and will continuing using that method.

Thanks for your help.

Hey, Howard, . . . from one old sailor to another, . . . have fun with that.

What kind of holster did you make? Post some pictures, . . . everyone here likes to see new ideas.

Hi Dwight,

Its a great day, no wind and 80 degrees. I just love living in the desert.

I made pancake holster by Beverly Jones, that was in the Nov/Dec 2015. Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal on page 41. I can't post any pictures, as I don't own a camera. To tell you the truth. I don't know what type of camera to buy. I would like to post some pictures so I could get some feedback (good or bad). I have some thick skin, ah ah. I am learning mostly from this site, as I can not find anyone in my area that does leatherwork.

Have a great day

Ya gotta promise not to laugh.............. I take pictures with my I-phone, . . . then email them to myself.

Pull em out and run em through the Adobe Photoshop oven, . . . voila, . . . pictures my man.

I used to do a camera, . . . onto the chip, . . . chip out, . . . load onto computer, . . . yadda, yadda, yadda.

Phone is so much easier and quicker, . . . plus I can take a generally lousy picture with my phone and snazz it up with my Adobe.

May God bless,

Dwight

Toney & Dwight,

I didn't think about a phone. Thank you both. That saves some money. One question, does it have to be a smart-phone, because I have a dumb-phone.

Smart phone / dumb phone, . . . makes no difference if you can do 2 things: take the picture, . . . then send it to yourself as a message, a text, or as a picture.

My old phone (dumb one) would take the picture, . . . but I had no real way of getting the image off the phone. Verizon had disabled the cable connection, . . . and the salesperson conveniently "forgot" to tell me that when I got my last dumb phone.

I researched it this time, . . . got an I-phone 5, . . . am super happy with it, . . . especially with the ability to picture something, . . . send it, . . . talk to the other party about it, . . . takes a lot of uncertainty out of some of the leather work I do.

May God bless,

Dwight
