I'm not a leatherworker by any means.  My experience level was a project or two that I did involving stamps in Cub Scouts probably 30 years ago.  I am a machinist and welder by trade and I do woodworking as a hobby at home.  I've been wanting to experiment with some simple leatherworking and I watched a few Youtube videos on leather carving.  I am looking for some basic tools to get started:  a stylus, a swivel cutter, a mallet, and some stamps (pear shader, camoflauge, beveler, veiner, etc).  I know Tandy sells starter kits, but I don't want to spend a ton of money to get started.  I was wondering if any of you on leatherworker.net had any extras or tools lying around collecting dust that you could sell me at a reasonable price just to get going.  I appreciate any help that I can get.  Thank you.

Probably a longshot, but look on Craigslist.  I bought a nice assortment of stamps that way and it had a nice case, marble slab, etc.  guy was getting out of leatherworking.

Springfield Leather has some good start up kits.

Ebay is another good resource to get stamps and things. You can get the 'starter kit' stamp sets for around $15. A wood mallet only costs about $5 and I saw a swivel cutter for less than $4. Going the piecemeal route can save you at least half the price of buying a kit. :)
