klaykrusher Report post Posted May 5, 2016 Wondering if anyone can recommend a source for spring steel. Looking for 1/2" to 1" width by 4" to 48" or longer in length. Will be used to reinforce holsters and belts. I've seen some which is used in dress making, but lengths are pretty short. Also it may be called by other names. Martyn Report post Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) Spring steel is just plain carbon tool steel that has been heated treated to a spring temper. You cant work it once it's been heat treated. You would usually shape and form the steel while in it's annealed (soft) state and then once you are happy, harden it and temper back to a spring temper. You could do the heat treat and temper yourself with a blowtorch and a domestic oven. Edited May 5, 2016 by Martyn
TacticallySharp Report post Posted May 6, 2016 Aldo at the New Jersey Steel Baron carries it in 4 foot lengths. I would recommend 5160 high carbon alloy steel. It's also used to make car and truck leaf springs. He sells new annealed steel. A lot of us that also forge knives buy it from him.
