Members jrny4wrd Posted June 3, 2016 Members Report Posted June 3, 2016 Thinking of starting to make my own buckles. Thoughts, nickle and pewter, some sort of tin alloy seems to be the best way to start at learning. Does anyone know if the chemical reaction with the vegetable tanned leather of these metals will effect it in a negetive way? Would the buckles need to be plated? Quote
Members TLP Posted June 4, 2016 Members Report Posted June 4, 2016 I do belt buckles in Sterling silver and Bronze, and have never had a problem with the metal and leather reacting with each other. Do not know if there is a reaction between pewter and leather but do not think there is as there are a lot of die cast pot metal buckles out there. Are you going to be fabricating (start with sheet and solder on parts) or casting? Quote
Members jrny4wrd Posted June 4, 2016 Author Members Report Posted June 4, 2016 Casting. I ended up finding a forum that discussed it. Thank you. Do you cast the bronze? Quote
Members TLP Posted June 5, 2016 Members Report Posted June 5, 2016 I do cast lost wax in bronze and Sterling, and also fabricate from sheet and wire. Quote
