Thread Sizes

Recommended Posts

I have been looking at different threads, and think I want to start out using linen thread, looking specifically at Barbour's right twist, but don't know how what size to get. This will be for hand sewing, and I'll make my own "sticky wax" (beeswax/rosin mix). I'll mostly be doing knife sheaths and holsters, but also want to do belts, leashes, eventually bags, etc... The main thing I do though is knife sheaths, so that's where I want to start. Can anybody help? Have a picture with the different sized stitched as a sample?

Thanks!

I make sheaths from 3mm veg tan leather, and use 18/3 linen thread with a 4mm spacing between the stitching holes. As good a place as any to start

Attached is a quick sample of some stitch sizes. Please excuse their roughness as I was intending to demo the pricking wheel set rather than my stitching skills and I had worked through the night on a couple orders I'd got behind on. They are marked in stitches per inch (SPI) and all use size 18/3 linen, just as zuludog recommended. A small spool of 18/3 should cost about £5, last for a great deal of sheaths, and you have a wide range of colours from which to choose. stitch sizes.JPG
