Members japan7181 Posted July 27, 2016 Members Report Posted July 27, 2016 I'll be traveling soon and living in a barracks/hotel for a couple of months. I have a stitching pony, but it is a bit bulky to bring with me from Japan to the US. I should have some time on my hand and would like to get some leather working in on my off time. I am interested to know what others use in lieu of a stitching pony when traveling. Or, is there a good travel pony available? Thanks! Quote
Boriqua Posted July 27, 2016 Report Posted July 27, 2016 I would think the one available from tandy or one like it would suit your needs. I have one and it is pretty narrow. Mine has the base screwed and glued in place but if you didnt glue the base on and just screwed it in place when you were ready to use it it would fit in most suitcases and bags and be about 2 inches thick. https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/lacing-stitching-pony Were I going to move about a lot I would probably put a tee nut in the bottom and use some machine screw but if you are traveling to one spot and plan on being there a while the supplied wood screw should be fine. If you wanted to get even more minimalist you could certainly get away with 2 pieces of half inch thick by 3/4 inches wide by 18 inches tall pieces of wood bound together with rubber bands. Lay it across your left thigh and have it held in place under your right thigh. I have done it and it works fine. Alex Quote
Members plinkercases Posted July 27, 2016 Members Report Posted July 27, 2016 I made one a little beefier than the Tandy and with a more user friendly tightening method - I used a tie down ratchet strap and it work well for one hand operation. You can take the base off with one bolt/nut and the base goes under the thighs when sitting on any chair and is very stable. You are likely going to have to make something to go with a commercial unit (Their other options than Tandy but basically the same form factor) Quote "Oh my God....I beseech thee grant me the grace to remain in Thy Presence; and to this end do Thou prosper me with Thy assistance, receive all my works, and possess all my affections" Brother Lawrence c.1614-1691 plinkercases.ca
Members japan7181 Posted July 28, 2016 Author Members Report Posted July 28, 2016 Thanks for the inputs. I have a pony that I am very happy with, so I think I may give the rubber bands and two slabs of wood a try. What a great idea! Thanks again! Quote
