Cheyenne Report post Posted August 31, 2016 Looking to do leather work making Corsets , Leather jackets and such. I have learned that I will need a "walking foot" machine. Have been looking at used machines but just do not know enough about them to know which will be best for my needs. Also looking at which is easiest for parts or repairs if needed, told to look ffor a DC motor as well.
mikesc Report post Posted August 31, 2016 (edited) Read old threads in the sewing machine section ..there are 201 ( 's weird, I thought there were more, I read 'em all, and a lot of others from other sections of the site here before making my 1st post ) at the moment..begin at the oldest, work your way forward to present day..you'll learn a lot about which might suit you, and about which would not..( the answers to your questions lie in those old threads ) and which you could afford. Read also Wiz's thread..http://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/25239-the-type-of-sewing-machine-you-need-to-sew-leather/ Edited August 31, 2016 by mikesc

dikman Report post Posted August 31, 2016 Cheyenne, welcome to the forum. It's probably the best resource for learning about leather and leather sewing machines - but there is a lot to learn! To a large extent the machine you need will be determined by how thick you want to sew. A heavy duty machine isn't going to be much use on lighter stuff and conversely something that will handle lightweight materials will definitely struggle (or die!) on heavy leather. Will you need a flat bed or cylinder arm? Another factor is the thread size you want to use. I would hazard a guess that a Singer 111/211 class, Consew 206, Juki 563 etc might be a reasonable starting point. Parts aren't too hard to find for them, but most will probably come with a clutch motor (not the easiest to master for someone just starting out) but servo (DC) motors aren't that expensive and are pretty easy to fit. And yes, consider Wiz's thread as the starting point for your journey.
