Members kiltedwarrior Posted September 5, 2016 Members Report Posted September 5, 2016 I am new and have been self taught on my leather working but have had a few colors of dye actually start a metallic look when dry. Is there a way to prevent this and is there a way to remove the metallic look on items done Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted September 5, 2016 Contributing Member Report Posted September 5, 2016 If you're using alcohol dyes, that's fairly normal. Without the long-winded poo about particles which aren't absorbed.... the short version is, that 'tint' should buff off. Quote "Observation is 9/10 of the law." Members kiltedwarrior Posted September 5, 2016 Author Members Report Posted September 5, 2016 Thank you I forgot to mention is was the alcohol based. But will start buffing and work it out of a couple pieces. Thanks again Quote
Members Colt W Knight Posted September 6, 2016 Members Report Posted September 6, 2016 I hadon't a really bad problem with this on a bunch of cheap hides. Basically, the alcohol is making an oil slick with oils from the hide. Now, I clean all my leather with saddle soap prior to working with it, and I never had that problem again. It also works after the fact, but I just apply the saddle soap when I am wetting the leather for tooling. Quote
Members TheCyberwolfe Posted September 10, 2016 Members Report Posted September 10, 2016 Colt's got it - a little soap, dry it, buff it with some carnauba cream. I ran into this with one of my early projects, before I switched to oil-based dyes. Here's a link to that post from my blog. http://www.rogueleather.com/2009/07/trouble-with-dye/ Quote -- I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute! www.rogueleather.com
