Tandy lightweight saddle skirting leather

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

Has anyone got any experience using this type of leather, it is on offer but i need some advice as it is a 4 hour round trip to purchase. ( I would prefer to select my leather from Tandy . rather than order online - I normally get my leather from Abbey so this is something new to me).

Does this leather dye well i want to use it for belts and heavy strap goods

it 'might' be 10 oz, but I've never seen that stock to actually be 12 oz.  Expect it to be dry and hard.

Before you go north of Watford (where there be dragons) have you tried JT Bachelors of Dalston? They have a good line in veg tan -- sides and shoulders. Closed weekends though I think.

Is there any reason you don't buy tooling leather from Abbey? I've only ever bought their Italian bridle.

Hi Matt i normally get my leather from Abbey bridle butts/backs (Sedgwick) have used John White before not a fan and sometimes use Metropolitan leather in Thrapston but both are open Monday to Friday.

I Only get one full day off every fortnight which is a Sunday plus Saturday afternoon so this maybe one of the few times i can select the leather myself.

I thought JT Bachelors were wholesale only i wish Metropolitan leather were open on Saturdays i would go there slightly nearer for me i  got a nice black

bridle butt from them.

yes the Watford gap you mean i make sure i get back before it gets dark.

Thanks Studio-N do you me for tooling or just in general because i won't be tooling the leather just want to use it

for straps. I want a hole side because it will give length i need to make leads reins for horses just thought for the price

might give it a try.

If you're going to hand pick it yourself you may find a good thick hide.  92" and up is harder to find these days since everyone seems to be taking the cows quite young.

should be able to get around 16-18 good straps  from the spine down.  the belly is not usally very good and is usually lighter in weight.  cheers!

Thanks for the info have to wait 2 weeks before i can get there and have a look for myself if its seems ok i will get 2 hides

if not see what is on offer in store.

Have you ever used Tandys Latigo i really like the burgundy colour i have  never used Latigo before so just thought i would ask if you have

although its very expensive over here at Tandys not seen it anywhere else this side of the pond.

the latigo is generally a good quality. nice and flexable, but I don't think it goes beyond their 8/10 oz offering.

Thanks again have looked at there site 9 to 10 oz so that would be heavy enough for what i would need it for

but as i said very pricey over here i can get a pair of sedgwick bridle butts from Abbey for around the same price so

keeping waiting for it to come on offer hopefully .
