elkevo Report post Posted November 15, 2016 So, a co-worker asked if I could make him a sheath for a 18"-20" blade Bowie knife. The leather I have on hand is 8-9 oz shoulder. Will this be stout enough to support a knife of that weight? I haven't seen the knife, but any suggestions for making a sheath for a knife that big? Thanks, Kevin
Norton Custom Leather Report post Posted November 15, 2016 that depends on the support that he wants. i am doing a sheath now for a customer that wants a sturdy low flex knife sheath. the sheath will be bout 26 oz. extremely thick i know. it is for an original bowie knife with a bone handle. the outside of the sheath is shark is shark & the flexibility will be very little where the blade is supported. 8-9oz i a good start & can make a sturdy sheath. best to do is get some examples for the customer to look at. see what conditions it will be used in. then decide on thickness. TexasJack Report post Posted November 16, 2016 The thickness shouldn't be an issue. The design of the sheath will determine the "support" - i.e., how comfortably it will attach to a belt. Take a look around at some of the longer sheaths for ideas.
snubbyfan Report post Posted November 16, 2016 8-9 ounce'd be fine for a big ol' Bowie. There's a fellow that collects big Bowie knives. He's left handed and he comes to me for his sheaths. I use 8-9 ounce with a welted edge. Plenty of support. Latest knife and sheath: I've been buggin' him to let me dress it up a bit next time but he likes 'em plain.
