Members Valachio Posted January 10, 2017 Members Report Posted January 10, 2017 What is the average thickness of a whole cowhide before they split it into 2 parts (top grain and split)? I heard it is around 4mm, is that right? And what is the average thickness of the top grain and split portion? I know the top grain section is usually 1.2mm, so that means the split section would be around 2.8mm right? Thanks. Quote
Members johnv474 Posted May 2, 2017 Members Report Posted May 2, 2017 They split into several pieces. Full thickness is what you get in a piece of saddle skirting, around 13-14 oz, or 5-6mm. Usually splits are 1-2mm. Quote
Members Matt S Posted May 2, 2017 Members Report Posted May 2, 2017 Some hides are as much as 10mm in places, but that isn't at all even across the hide. The first splitting is typically just to level the hide out for further splitting. Quote
