mixmkr Report post Posted January 22, 2017 My binder has been working flawlessly up to just recently. I have a swing away, right angle binder hooked up to my JUKI. Or...it can be fastened to an extra bobbin plate that I have also. However, it is not folding the binding in half perfectly anymore. I've switched everything from different binding, proximity, you name it. What happens is the binding is pushed to the right up against the binding fence and causes me to miss stitches on the binding on the underside, not to mention lousy looking sewing lines. The top is folder over too much also as a result. That's really the problem. I originally had a taller needle plate and feed dog, that stood "proud" of the base, but to gain presser foot space, replaced that with a flush setup. But with my "flush setup" it doesn't seem reliable. I can go about two feet, then it veers off. I ordered a INLINE binder from Sailrite, so maybe that will help feed it better than my right angle binder. I"d prefer not to keep switching needle plate and feed dogs out, just to do the binding. So...Inline versus right angle??? Will see.
Constabulary Report post Posted January 22, 2017 (edited) are you using binding tape of the same width al the time? Binders are usually made for using just 1 certain width of binding tape. Edited January 22, 2017 by Constabulary
mixmkr Report post Posted January 22, 2017 yes, using purchased 1" binding tape from Sailrite. The only change has been the needle plate and feed dog, and I guess I could switch it out again, but I'm really looking to keep the plate that I have that is flush as I don't do binding enough as compared to needing the space for the presser foot. I haven't switched back to my "taller" plate and feed dog, because it was doing OK for about 50 feet of previously done binding. Then of course, a new job and it starts goofing up. Looking at the Sailrite binder in their videos, it appears there is less "slop" for the binding to move around in the feeder compared to what I have now. The beginning of my current 1" feeder would take a tape about 1.25 inches....but NOT as it comes out of the binder. I'm also NOT really fond of the way these right angle binders kinda "invert" the binding so to speak. The straight feed is just that....no "reverse fold" so to speak....if that makes sense. It's just fed in and then folded as it comes out.
Uwe Report post Posted January 22, 2017 (edited) Binding and tape folding is an art and science in my experience. If your binding setup worked flawlessly, you got lucky by using the right combination of mount angle , alignment and height, tape folder width and thickness, tape width and thickness, material thickness, and a few other factors. Change one thing and all bets are off. Edited January 22, 2017 by Uwe

Constabulary Report post Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) I just recently have setup my Pfaff 345 with a binder bracket and I´m using a modified binder attachment - actually the cheapest I have found and it works excellent. Left over from the idea mounting a synchronized binder on my 111 - never finished this project since the 345 popped up. I really bought the cheapest I found as it was meant just for testing but I´m very pleased with it and I see no need for buying other binders atm. I´m using a 3/4 binder but have 2 more sizes which I yet have not tested. But will test them maybe this weekend and let you know. These are raw edge binder and fold the tape just 1x I do not recall where I bought them (I think from Sharp Sewing) but this is the style I bought - you see not dedicated to my machine but with a light modification yet the 3/4" works excellent. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SINGLE-FOLD-RAW-EDGE-PLAIN-RIGHT-ANGLE-BINDER-SET-S64-/302166356162?var=&hash=item465a84b0c2:m:m5b_hmfELS9Ia7QquLH9plw Some pictures Edited January 23, 2017 by Constabulary
Constabulary Report post Posted January 23, 2017 BTW - I don´t see it well enough but are you using the standard needle plate? There is one for binders too which is a bit raised. https://www.college-sewing.co.uk/store/240144B-BINDER-PLATE-SINGER-111W-STW8B-B837-LU563-USE-WITH-FEEDER-240112HB Maybe this will work better. You also need a raised feed dog https://www.college-sewing.co.uk/store/240112HB-BINDER-FEED-SINGER-111W-STW8B-B837-LU563-USE-WITH-NEEDLE-PLATE-240144B
mixmkr Report post Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) Thanks Const for your pics and reply.... As noted above, I do have the taller feed dog and needle plate and it worked NOT using them for a bit. If I HAVE to revert back to them I will, but prefer having the extra space under the presser foot, as that is needed much more than the binding setup. But..if "push comes to shove"...we'll do what we have to do. I've looked at those binders too, but already have the right angle as shown in my pic above. The INLINE binder from Sailrite should arrive early this week, so will give that a whirl and hopefully will be the ticket. thx again. mixmkr Report post Posted January 26, 2017 Just got my inline binder from Sailrite today, got it hooked and couldn't get it to mess up. Pics to follow. But I think this one is a winner! :-D
