How is this stitched with a sewing machine?

Recommended Posts

Hi experienced leatherworkers,

Newbie here, first I want to thank you for your time and willingness to help, I really felt the supportive vibe from the threads that I've read on this forum.

So I've been trying to figure out which sewing machine to buy that will enable me to sew the most types of sewing seen in bags. I'm really drawn to the more structured bags with defined geometries, but I could not in my head imagine how I would sew the inside of a bag such as Building Block's beautiful square cross-body bag.

It looks like the sides are in one continuous piece of leather and are sewn onto a square back. But looking at the stitchwork, I simply have no idea how a sewing machine can achieve this.

Another example is Mansur Gavriel's sleek crossbody bag.

here's a quick one, the side edges of a typical leather tote are sewn by a transverse cylinder sewing machine right?

Thank you all!

I've wondered the same thing. My best guess is a post machine

Yea I think the bottom one uses post machine as well.

The top one is still a mystery to me though @@

Thanks!

Just a guess reg. the blue squared bag: Supposing the bottom is attached last (you cannot see clear in the picture if there is a stitching at the bottom on the gusset)

Through that hole, in theory, a Patcher can stitch in all directions but it doesn't produce such nice stitching...

Zipper is previously sewn to the gusset.

I'm curious to read other opinions.

Thank you gigi! I do believe the bottom is opened as suggested by this other photo of the bag:

My guess is post machine on both bags. But...On the tan bag, depending what the back looks like (If it is same as front, the cylinder would not be able to  stitch front and back. If only the front is that type seam,  then a cylinder would be used to stitch the front first to get that look, then the back attached after.  One of my machines has a 3 foot post, so i can easily sew hat boxes, golf bags or anything like first bag as well. I use several different machines during the building process so depending how i build it depends which machine i use.
