sandyt Report post Posted March 7, 2017 Hi people, I recently bought a bunch of used spare parts. Among them where pfaff hooks. While I am sorting them, a question came to mind. I always used to clean the little groove in the hook, see picture. I always assumed it was dust build up. Now, I looked at a few hooks and they look to be packed with a felt like material. Is this the way it should be? Is it an oil wick? Or is it dust built up? Sandy.
Diyer Report post Posted March 7, 2017 My guess is that it is an oil wick .If you have a machine handy, see if it matches up with an oil supply nearby.Does it show up as an item in the parts book? If it was there as a bits collector, I would expect the sides at each end to be machined with a gradual slope, so as to catch "bits" as it went around. CowboyBob Report post Posted March 7, 2017 Yes,they are there to hold oil & release as needed, this area of the hook spins around & the other part is stationary so it needs a drop of oil everytime you change the bobbin but in factories @ higher speeds it's good to have oil there all the time. All these Pfaff hooks are very expensive so they don't want them to wear out. brmax Report post Posted March 7, 2017 That looks to be a piece of wool wick of sorts. Although I believe that will be covered by the retainer part with screws. This is what im remembering the hooks on my machines, but always learning some new. good day Floyd
CowboyBob Report post Posted March 7, 2017 The plate on a Pfaff has a hole in it to put the oil into this wick area.
sandyt Report post Posted March 7, 2017 You are correct, CowboyBob. Left and right a little screw. Middle a small hole for oiling. See picture. On my adler 220 it's just open. But no wick material or dust build up after cleaning. So there should be wick material in the reces? I have never bought a new hook, so I don't know if it's in there brand new. Sandy.
