Does anyone have a source for thick sheets of 100% wool felt like what is used in saddle lining or blankets? I haven't had much luck with an internet search, as everyone I've found either sells very thin sheets or only sells in very large quantities. I would really appreciate any help you guys could give me. skip Report post Posted January 29, 2008 just for grins a giggles you could go down to the local tack and feed store and buy a one inch felt pad from them and cut the wheels yourself, Not sure how much your talking about but the felt pads usually come in 30 Inch by 34 inch and you should be able to cut a couple of discs out of one pad to fulfill your needs. hope I am not too out of line. good luck Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Art Report post Posted January 29, 2008 Hi Jeff, Most of the "felt" out there is polyester, not much good for higher heat apps. The stuff from Weaver is poly so there is probably a lot of it out there in the "horsey" world. The stuff from Aetna is real wool felt like you want. F-1 felt will be 95% wool (I had to cut this with a band saw if you want that density), and there are some grades called ultra density that are as hard as wood (you don't want these). F-3 will be about 85% wool and may still be what you need (I could cut this with a round punch, but I have a BIG maul 96oz). You can call Aetna Felt for more application info. 800-526-4451 is the last # I have for them, you will have to call to order. Your mileage will vary, but I built up enough static electricity the first time to light up Las Vegas. Being a slow learner, I did it again to see if it was repeatable. It was. Billy P Report post Posted January 29, 2008 Hey all you saddlemaker types out there, does anyone of ya'll know where a person might could get some small pieces of felt. I need something that is fairly soft. If I can find some I want to cut them into about 1"x1" squares and make me some of the old daubers like Tandy and Zack White used to sell. They were great for dyeing edges, a lot less slop over the edges plus good for a few other things too. For what I want them for it would not make sense to try and buy a sheet. (Not to suggest that the pricing is so much Aetna as it is the cost of such felt itself.) If you go to Brownell's or one of the auto finishing sites you can buy felt polishing wheels, I think a six by 1" medium wheel costs around $36. So it sounds like the price from Aetna was much better. BTW, John is now using leather wheels to do edges, my felt ones haven't worn out yet (they seem to be getting better) so I haven't tried them yet. You can also make your own burnishing disk by getting hold of some scrap canvas or denim and sewing together enough disks to obtain the thickness you want. Nothing fancy, big stiches will do fine. I imagine all I must do is cut the felt the width of the edge I'm dying. Put the felt in a clothespin and go to it. Is this about right? ed Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
barra Report post Posted March 2, 2008 (edited) A passable dauber can be had by substituting the thick engineering felt with thick carpet underlay (free offcuts from the carpet store). Cut the long straight section out of a wire coat hanger. Spear it through the thickness of the underlay, bend over the wire and squash it in a vice. To fashion a handle you can just bend over the other end to give yourself something to grip or semi sharpen the end and twist on a cork.
