Members desertwastes Posted May 20, 2017 Members Report Posted May 20, 2017 (edited) I have watched a couple very helpful videos on tool sharpening. However, I just want to be sure there isn't a different way of doing this : My edge groover is about as dull as I would ever imagine one could be. There is quite a lot of resistance when I use it, is that normal for it to require quite a lot of pressure to create a groove, or does it indeed need to be sharpened somehow? I've attached an image of a Japanese make that I believe is the same/similar to my own. Thanks! Edited May 20, 2017 by desertwastes typo Quote
bikermutt07 Posted May 20, 2017 Report Posted May 20, 2017 Take a piece of scrap and cut a groove in it. Rub rouge into the groove. Then run your groover backwards thru it several times. You will notice a difference once it's sharp. Quote
Members billybopp Posted May 20, 2017 Members Report Posted May 20, 2017 If its really dull, work the outside on a stone or what have you, working turning as you go, then strop. Then use a bit of polish or some sort of grit on a toothpick to remove any burr on the inside and polish. Bill Quote

bikermutt07 Posted May 20, 2017 Report Posted May 20, 2017 Yeah, you have to sharpen everything when it comes to leather. Two years ago I could barely sharpen a pocket knife. You just have to make yourself learn it. Leather with dull tools is dangerous. I even polish my razor blades nowadays. Makes life easier. Quote

My tools only just arrived yesterday (finally), so I've been trying them out on scrap leather. You were right, first things first, I need to sharpen every tool. I'll have to pick up/make some things this week. Wet/dry paper, Rouge, leather strop.. Quote
bikermutt07 Posted May 20, 2017 Report Posted May 20, 2017 I use sand paper on a piece of quartz for my blades. Edge tools can be done just like the groover. Cut an edge, add rouge, and run backwards. Even the punches need some help. Al Stohlman has a book called "Leather Tools How to Use Them How to Sharpen Them". Very good book about 15 bucks on Amazon.
