Windrider30 Report post Posted July 8, 2017 Ok I see a few places saying that upholstery leather is good for bags anf garments. Is this true or is there better leather for garmets and bags?

I mainly use it for my small items like pouches and coin cases. It can make a nice handbag but it depends on the design. Durbality-wise it's pretty tough because it's expected to last many years of people sitting in it. All this is assuming we're talking about good top or full grain upholstery leather not bonded or bicast. Thanks just saw a deal off of tandy for a full hide of upholstery leather and have seen a few other tanners saying that it could be used for such things never tried it may give it a go. Be cautious of the "deal" from Tandy; their leathers are not of the better quality and if they are offering what appears to be a "smoking bargain" then it is most likely the lower grades and full of issues as they have picked it up from the source as rejects/seconds (not suitable for use in the manufacture of garments/upholstery). Tandy NEVER puts quality stuff on a bargain and they haven't been dealing in quality products for a very long time. If you go forward with the purchase of one of these hides be prepared for the potential (very real potential) that you will most likely not get much finished product out of it as it most likely contains blemishes, scratches, inconsistencies, and a myriad of other issues that would result in low yield. I must be lucky then out of the 2 or so years that I have been doing leather work most of my hides..minus the roo hide..I have gotten from tandy and have only had one lousy hide from them. But than again there is only one tandy store here in sydney hell might be the ONLY one in Australia. Now I know the owner said in the past they use to really pass off some shit leather to him but the quality that I have seen is damn good and i have literally spent thousands of dollars with Tandy since I started. LumpenDoodle2 Report post Posted July 10, 2017 Ok, I said I'd never do it again, but I did. Tandy UK were doing a deal on thick veg tan shoulders, and I decided "Oh, why not". It was nice enough, but fell off to a really soft, almost delaminated state up to about 6" from the edge in places. I'd advise contacting other leather dealers, and check the prices. Unless you can go to the Tandy shop personally to do the choosing.

The only real issue I have with the Tandy store here is that what they show on the web they some times either run out or do not have, I mean in this day and age tandy should be able to run the store's inventory though the website to show what they actually have! It gets damned annoying and has put me in a bind a time or two with a project for a client I have worked on

The ad I saw on Instagram (yep I follow tandy leather lol they do have some interesting pics from time to time) was 100 bucks (us of course) for a full hide of upholstery leather
