John at Byson Report post Posted July 10, 2017 Does anyone recognize this little setting press ? I picked it up at the week end and strangely there are No markings on it at all. It would be nice to know if tooling is still available... It is quite a nicely made bit of kit. http://www.bysonleather.co.uk/Odds & Sods.htm
LumpenDoodle2 Report post Posted July 10, 2017 I recognise it, but only because I have one too. No idea the make, and I don't really have a use for it. Just liked it.
John at Byson Report post Posted July 11, 2017 Yup, that is the one. The lower tool has "LR" or something like it stamped in to it. I have it for exactly the same reason you do, although if I can find tooling for it I can find work for it :-)
LumpenDoodle2 Report post Posted July 11, 2017 It's difficult to resist these old tools. I did do a google for the different fittings, but didn't have much luck, but will still keep looking.
billybopp Report post Posted July 11, 2017 I can't say for certain, but suspect that it is probably for setting eyelets. That was a very common operation in any shoe making or repair. We often see setters something like these on eBay as antiques. People don't have shoes repaired much anymore, so there are few cobblers left and their tools have been junked or float around as antiques for sale. If the die happens to be of a size that's usable to you it'll probably be a great little tool to have, but if not it'll be difficult to find dies for 'em I'd bet. You MIGHT try to see if you can retrofit dies from another press if you have the tools and inclination to try it - and if that proves reasonably easy you're in like Flynn!
