PhilC Report post Posted July 23, 2017 Hey everyone, First post! I came here for your opinion on a recent purchase - a full grain leather belt from a company called Slidebelts. I made this $85 investment hoping to get a belt that i can take care of and maintain so it will last me a very long time. When the belt came, i noticed it appears to be two pieces of leather glued together with two light layers separated by a darker layer in the middle that i am assuming is glue (see pics). I was expecting one piece of leather, although it does not specifically say its one piece in the item description... Based on the picture, am i looking at 2 pieces glued together, is this common practice for a full grain leather belt, does this defeat the purpose / decrease the longevity of the belt? I'm feeling like i may have been bamboozled and would like to make this a learning experience. Thanks for your insight!
Clintock Report post Posted July 23, 2017 Did you cut the belt in half? I've seen advertised with steel between the two layers in the belt. Still new at this but as much as I can tell makers do double up leather to make belts. Never heard of slide belts before so just did a quick look. My opinion is, and I may be the only one that thinks this, the plastic teeth wouldn't hold up over time. I could be wrong but I don't want anything plastic trying to hold my britches. Bonecross Report post Posted July 23, 2017 Yes, this is common practice. Nothing wrong with the construction of this belt.
OLDNSLOW Report post Posted July 23, 2017 You didn't show us the buckle end of the belt! to address one of the comments made above there are various methods used to reach the end product, I have in the past and will still make a belt if requested with either Kydex or Stainless in the middle of for more rigidity. I will start with 2 straps cut and spit from 1 strap and glue in the Kydex or stainless then sew them back together. If someone is not interested in that strong of a belt then I will take 1 strap cut from skirting to make the belt, and I will either sew in 1 or 2 stitch lines to help control the stretch and add contrast to the belt, the leather taken from skirt will range for 12 to 16 oz leather and I also use a stainless roller buckle.
