LOOKING FOR SOME HELP!

I have been asked to create a leather fire bucket as a gift.  I would like to keep it close to how it would have originally been constructed and i think i have a good idea of how i would like to do it.  Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated!  I am most curious about what type of waterproofing / hardening mixture can be made/ bought that was used in the production of these buckets.  I am doing as much research as possible and hope to get some ideas from you guys.

Thanks,

Kael

Hey Brother. Instructables has a good tutorial about a leather tankard that uses beeswax for sealing so it would hold true this should also work for making it waterproof. As for it's construction, there are a few sites out there that go into depth (at least describing) the construction of antique leather fire buckets. As far as what was "traditional" in water proofing it, some of these articles describe pitch tar as a sealing material. Both messy and not so easy on the nose.

This link goes into more specifics about construction materials

Best of luck!

Hello. I'm taking on a fire bucket as well and wanted to know if you received any useful information. Any guidance you could give me? Weight in leather, sewing techniques, or sealing?
