TomG Report post Posted October 28, 2017 I haven't sewn by hand in forever. I need to resew some leather armchairs but can't find my reference on how long to cut my thread for a strap. 3X the length, 4X? Thanks
cowboycolonel Report post Posted October 28, 2017 Depends on the thickness of the leather as well as the length. For saddle skirts, which come in at about 13-15 oz, I do twice the length, PLUS and additional 1/3 the length per side, when doing double needle stitching. In other words, 2 and 2/3 times the length to be sewed. It doesn't hurt to be come adept at splicing either. That way you end up wasting a lot less thread -- and I never throw away the "ends", saving them for tacking of sewing small items like keepers. That flax is expensive, so no need to waste it. Instinctive Report post Posted October 28, 2017 There's an APP for that. At least for Android. Canadian Society Of Creative Leather Craft (CSCL) have developed a Thread Length Calculator. Link in the play store is https://is.gd/l8OX4s I assume there is one for Apple as well.
TomG Report post Posted October 29, 2017 Thanks. I got it. And it was pretty close to the figures cowboycolonel gave. Now to the tedious job of sewing all this stuff up. Hope the arthritis holds out <g>
