RichardPorley Report post Posted November 15, 2017 (edited) Greetings from Brisbane, Australia, I have just joined this forum (Google made me do it!!) when searching for information on the Singer 29k71 I acquired last week, I love restoring old tools and machines to as close to new as possible, not just for display but to be able to use them the way they were intended, I had been looking for this kind of machine for a while now, and I was so eager to get one that I failed to see the top shaft has a significant bend at the pulley end, which would probably affect the belt staying on the pulley(I have pulled the base apart for painting so can not test it), and no, I did not try the treadle when I viewed the machine I just used the hand crank :-( , being the person I am if I don't fix it/replace it, it's going to annoy me for as long as I have this little beauty!!, so the shaft has to come out, I have the service manual and parts list and there seems to be not much to them, my question is does anybody know other than the shuttle timing, should I be aware of, before I remove the head, of anything critical that could affect the stitching or the feed motion when put back together? thank you for taking the time to read this and any help would be greatly appreciated. Richard. Edited November 15, 2017 by RichardPorley spelling
Constabulary Report post Posted November 15, 2017 The position of the cam pulley and the drive cam (inside the casting) on the top shaft for sure matters. But on the shaft you should see marks from the set screws so should be possible to put hem back in the right place. Gear box needs to be assembled correctly but if you have the manual it should show a picture of how the gear box should be assembled. I´ll attach it just for the case 29k71-71-73 Service Manual and Parts List.pdf
CowboyBob Report post Posted November 15, 2017 (edited) Get a long piece of pipe & try to straighten the shaft.Alittle wobble won't hurt(LOL)BUT if you have to replace the shaft get one from another machine will be a lot easier. The big cam on the rightside is set @ the factory for that shaft & machine. They adjust the timing & hold it & test sew on on it until it's right & then,it drilled & pinned. No 2-shafts will have this hole in the same spot.So if you can find a shaft w/a cam that belongs on it will be best.If you have to drill another hole in the shaft to get the correct timing you'll weaken it. RichardPorley Report post Posted November 16, 2017 Thanks guys, I'm glad I asked otherwise I would have been in trouble, that is the same manual I have, that cam has a tapered pin as well as a grub screw on the gear so it should go back the same way, the gearbox wont be a problem CowboyBob, I'm a bit worried about the casting when forcing the shaft, will have a good look tonight after work and see how solid that section is. I can always just use the hand crank I guess. Thanks again. Richard.
CowboyBob Report post Posted November 16, 2017 Don't worry, the casting can take it,I've straightened out a lot of them over the years.Just turn it slowly, find the exact high spot & give it alittle push, just alittle @ a time.

RichardPorley Report post Posted November 16, 2017 I have taken the shaft out now, tried the pipe, no go could not hold the machine secure enough to push down, I almost gave up, the rear cam pin would not come out, put everything back together again, I thought I was hitting it the right way, you know, from the small end (lol) it looked like the small end and is in the cam groove and the other end sticks out about 2mm, not so!! tapped it back the other way and it just came out, I will straighten it at work in the morning. Thanks again fellas, should be up and running by the weekend.
