Tools we create

Recommended Posts

I'm a maker, I love to create something from nothing. I also like to improve and make cooler the tools that I need. Although this isn't specific to leather, my x-acto is one of a kind. It's a tool we all use. ( This was a piece of cedar from my back yard. All done with a Mouse sander and dremel tool.) What are your hand made tools?katana.thumb.jpg.1efd36e2492a15018d5563a451568314.jpg

Neat!  Kind of reminds me of an old quill pen. Any working reasons for the extra length?

I'll post a couple of mine soon.  I've also restored most of my woodworking tools.  Most of my main ones are from the 40s and 50s.

Here's a couple of mine.  First up is a home made stitching pony for holding sticks while I stitch them.  It's made of a couple scrap pieces of maple and fir. The hinge is salvaged from a sewing machine cabinet and I just have a piece of 1/4" all thread with a nut and a wing nut on it for tightening.  It's crude but it works.  I figure if I do want to hold something flat I'll just shim it out with another piece of wood.

Here's a couple awls I made.

The top one I just made for stitching.  It's an interesting little offcut from a madrone shank I have.  The point is made from a broken off 1/16" drill bit ground to a diamond shape.

The bottom awl has a mahogany handle that I originally made as a sewing stiletto.  It sees use as a general purpose scratch awl.

necessity is the mother of invention. Not form or money. I like your raw intensity. This week I wanted to bend an oak plank, I20171202_155022_resized.thumb.jpg.296e7c13d219a0e34dd967c7a5352d52.jpg didn't have a table vise so I looked in my car trunk to find something that would hold wood in place, I was looking for rope and found a ratchet strap. I didn't have a steambox. So I spent $8 at Walmart for a stock pot (I wasn't bending 6 feet of timber!). I used another ratchet strap to pull and bend my board. leverage. That was the key. Not a bench vise and a mold. a little more shaping to finish. then tongue oil. a wooden ball for a 360 pivot attatched to my bench:)
