kirkspringer Report post Posted December 4, 2017 First post here, I'm probably doing it wrong. Please correct (gently ) as you see fit... I picked up a rivet setting tool at an estate sale and don't know what size it is. The hole for setting the burr is .22 inches (5.6mm) in diameter. Can someone enlighten me as to what size this is? I think I saw somewhere that you can use a larger tool on a smaller rivet. Does that sound right? Is the rule of thumb if the post fits it works? Thanks for your help! Instinctive Report post Posted December 5, 2017 Based on my experience, that would be for a very large rivet. I use mostly #12 rivets, approximately 3 mm) the setter just fits the shaft. You need a very close fit for the tool and rivet shaft so the burr does not "cone" when being set. You want to keep it flat. That size setter would be about a #7 rivet (if it exist). #8 rivets have a 4.5mm shaft. Here is great video on copper rivet setting.
kirkspringer Report post Posted December 5, 2017 That's super helpful. I wondered, based on the shaft sizes I could find. I don't think I paid much for it, so I have that going for me, which is nice...
bikermutt07 Report post Posted December 5, 2017 I really don't know anything about those type rivets. I haven't used them yet. But if it's .22" I would guess that it would be for some heavy harness tack.
480volt Report post Posted December 5, 2017 RJ Leahy of San Francisco has good information on rivet sizing on their website. https://www.rjleahy.com/
Jake907 Report post Posted December 5, 2017 are you sure its for copper rivets? I've seen people use brass casings from .22 LR caliber cartridges as rivets. always wanted to try it.
