Deryk Report post Posted December 21, 2017 Hello Folks, I am mostly a Hobbyist, but friends have suggested I should try selling my work on etsy (along with a million other people lol) I like making bags and want to start making backpacks and travel bags but the thought of the amount of hand stitching kind of makes me drag my feet. I have a Sail-rite Ultra-feed® LSZ‑1 PLUS with the monster wheel and using leather needles, which is ok for canvas work and light weight leather but the 4oz oiled utility hide I got from Tandy's black friday sale, the largest leather needles they make for my machine wont punch through it...it does ok with the 3-4 oz veg-tan I put through it but it sews too fast for the control I want to have over the piece. I was looking at the Cowboy CB3200 I think it will meet my needs and been watching some YouTube video's but I figure getting some opinions from here might help. I will be honest I am curious about their new Outlaw hand powered model... but for a little more I can have a powered unit and the servo motor is much better then the electric motor on my LSZ. I really need to make up my mind in the next few weeks because I had a workman's comp injury over the summer and have to have a disk replaced and fused that was done 30 years ago in February and I am looking at being home for at least 3 months... and won't be up for making my rustic country furniture (my other hobby) so I figure leather work will be doable. Hate charging that much on my credit card, but I know I will go stir crazy at home with nothing to do.
garypl Report post Posted December 21, 2017 If you can afford it, get a nice cylinder arm machine with the optional table. There is a wide variety with varying capacities. Call the dealers listed in the banner ads and tell them what you want to do and they will give you good advice. I bought a larger machine than I needed, but it has done just about everything I want with no problems. Sewing light garment leather is even possible, but I will be getting another machine that can use thread smaller than 138 for very light leather. As been said here many times, there is no one machine that will work optimally across the entire spectrum of leatherworking. Gary
Bustedmp77 Report post Posted December 21, 2017 If you're considering a hand operated machine like the cowboy outlaw or the tippmann boss, Spend a few extra on a powered machine. I bought a tippmann boss a little over a year ago, and while it is by far much better than hand stitching, I am now finding myself wishing I'd have gone with a powered machine. I do like my boss, but after double stitching a gun belt, my arm is tired. I am going to purchase a cowboy 4500 in the future, just not sure if it will be 2 weeks or 2 years. I thought about a 3200, but some of the holsters I make need the throat depth it offers. Stitching them on my boss with maybe a 6 inch throat requires thought and planning on how to run the holster through the machine. I love the machine for what it is and haven't had any problems with it in the year I've had it though.
