Gday fellow leather workers, have browsed this site for months now and have finally built up the courage to join and post some of my work. First of all i have been totally inspired and gobsmacked at the level of work presented and the encouragement offered here. A couple of knife sheaths i made for my many stone handled knives i make. Feel free to comment and thanks for looking.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for posting your work!  Nice looking knives and sheaths.  Did you also make the knives?

I love the darker sheath, but not so keen on the lighter sheath with the rivet stuck on the tip.  The round rivet on the pointy end just looks out of place to me.  Maybe better to just use a welt and leave the rivet out - just my opinion!

Thanks garypl yes the rivet does look somewhat out of place, you dont really notice these things when your making them. i was trying to reduce the space between the stiching and outer edge and in doing so didnt leave enough room for the rivet.(heres to learning). I dont make the knives i buy them as blanks then i cut grind and polish the stone before fitting them to the blank. I hope one day to be able to forge my own blades and that will also be a journey.

They look nice!   Just a couple thoughts.  Add a welt for sure.  This is a piece of leather that fits in between the front and back piece maybe 1/2 inch wide.  this protects the stitching from the knife cutting it.   My other thought as I look at these the wet molding is real nice, but I wonder does it need to come up the knife a bit more? seems like it should to hold them in better.

In regards to making knives go for it. Lots of ways to do and it and tons of information on the net about how to go about it.  Its fun and how many folks can say they made their own!

The stone handles are neat too.....I know you need special tools to work them.  Keep up the nice work

Both sheaths are excellent! I particularly liked the dark one as well. Would you mind to explain you process for dying it? Did you airbrush the light color and then the dark around the edges, or did you apply it by hand? And if so how?

Thanks Ross, i must say you do some outstanding work and i  hold your opinion in high regard. Just a quick question, would i have to continue the welt all the way around the two pieces or just on the edge side? As for the moulding coming up a bit more that is something that i do on other knife sheaths and could possibly do on this knife aswell. I find that the position of the rivets pulls the leather in a bit so when the knife goes in it has to stretch a tiny bit making a firm interference fit. Yes you do need special equipment to grind and polish stone, i belong to a club that supplies the equipment so i dont have to outlay a heap of money and the social aspect of the club is good too.

Thanks Mr Yeti, i dyed the whole lot cherry and built up the color in the middle applying with a sponge letting it dry between coats untill it was the color i wanted. I then used the same sponge with a couple of drops of black into the cherry so it wasnt fully black but a very dark cherry and worked to the outer edge. The final step was to apply straight black on the very outer edge and as far in as the stitching. Have dyed another one the same way which ended up slightly darker. I have also been experimenting with an eye dropper to apply some random drops and had some good results.

I appreciate the compliment!   But I am mostly self taught thanks to this forum, You tube and lots of reading.   So to me I am still very much an amateur. But your comment about my work is very humbling.

Thats a good question on the welt.   For me I usually make a pouch sheath for this style of knife so the welt has always been on just one side.   I have then welt molded the whole sheath to the knife in the past.    You can do this by wrapping the knife up in plastic wrap to protect it while you wet mold it around the knife. I am guessing you are wet molding the front piece of leather around the knife and then once dry stitching it on the back part.  So this makes it interesting because adding the welt after that would not give you the same wet molding. hmmm.....Not sure I have a good answer here....perhaps someone else can chime in on it.   you could welt all around sew it and then wet mold maybe....but not sure you would get as clean a result.

Keep up the good work..I enjoy posts like this cause we are all learning.
