loccom Report post Posted April 2, 2018 Hi Guys I am a newb, be gentle :D I have just purchased my first machine which I intend to use for Binding edges. It is a Singer 211/166 which i believe is a half decent machine. I don't have any service manuals and before i start testing it out I would like to make sure it's well oiled. From what I can see there is a platic nozzle above a clear oil resevoir. I assume i pull this nozzle out to fill with oil? I can also see a wick above the needle. I assume this resevoir will automatically drip feed the wick? Also, what are the main places I should manually add some oil? Sorry, i am very new to this and just want to make sure I get plenty of work out of my investment. Cheers!
brmax Report post Posted April 2, 2018 Many times we can still get a glance of the red paint surrounding some holes on the machine. These are regular maintenance lube points for some sew machine oil. On the side cover they have a couple tiny plastic covers for lube points. I would rather remove that cover a give it a better service. When you slide to bobbin cover open, the assembly there needs sew machine oil. The saddle they call one part might still have a dip stick for checking oil level in that particular part. In that a manual can describe these specifics better and its probably best we locate a manual or one from the basic series machine for reference. Does yours have a place on top with site glass showing lube level possibly Here in the forums search, some tips can be had. Another method is pushing the site through google with a ending of your interest. CowboyBob Report post Posted April 2, 2018 The wick your talking about is for thread lube, which you probably don't need unless your sewing real fast & or heavy material. Here's a operators manual for your machine. Singer 211 Operators Guide-Small.pdf

Trevor Baret Report post Posted April 3, 2018 Hi, I know nothing about the particular machine you have, but I might be able to help with some other info. You can download the user manual here - http://parts.singerco.com/IPsvcManuals/211G165_166_265_266.pdf The service manual here - http://parts.singerco.com/IPsvcManuals/211G165_166_265_266.pdf A range of manuals are available here for lots of Singer machines - http://ismacs.net/free-sewing-machine-manuals-list.html#S These include user manuals, parts lists and some service manuals manuals for other brands can also be found here - https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/sewing-machine-manuals.aspx Ismacs is a very handy site for lots of info. To find out what machine you are looking at on ebay, as long as you have the serial number, you can check out singer serial numbers here - http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/serial-numbers/singer-sewing-machine-serial-number-database.html I have often found that someone is advertising a particular machine, but the serial number tells me that they actually have something else. That will give you the age of the machine and where it was built, along with the model number. Once you have the model number. you can look that up here - http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/model-list/classes-1-99.html That page will give you more specific information about each individual model of Singer machine. (other brands can also be found on that site). I hope some of this info will be helpful to you. Trevor

EF....? All of the EF machines were made in 1949 and 1950. There were 999,999 in that Serial Number range Edited April 10, 2018 by Trevor Baret

I am guessing your machine was probably made in 1950s - with a black ring around the singer logo disc. Hope the sources of manuals above were helpful. Rockoboy Report post Posted April 26, 2018 (edited) Singer machines with serial numbers with prefix between FA and FY were made from 1935 according to the google-search I just did. Obviously by the time they got to FE, it might have been years later, or maybe the lettering system was not in alphabetical order.
