Roger Posted July 6, 2007 Author Report Posted July 6, 2007 thanks guys! it is oil dyies and the side is 3-4oz veg tan. i use it for the sides of all my seats Quote
Guest Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 Roger, Yes, Roger I really do want to see that "how-to" from you......We've had a dry assembly "how to" for motorcycle seats.... It is your turn now. Oil dyes eh? I got a lot of rub off the last time I used Fiebings black oil dye. Mine was the standard black not the USMC black. I had a strange reaction with some of Tandy's Pro dye a few weeks back.....There must have been something in or on the leather when I sprayed on my "buckskin" dye..... The stuff began to bubble and foam almost immediately. Never could get the foamy stuff to come off or get the stain to cover properly on that spot on the seat. It was only on a spot about 4" in diameter but the seat was a "start over". Mind you that the staining is the LAST thing I do. I was a bit upset to say the least Dave Theobald Quote
Roger Posted July 6, 2007 Author Report Posted July 6, 2007 (edited) what i have found with oil dyies is that you need to let them dry completely then buff a bit with a piece of old blue jeans then apply some lexol and let it soak in good and buff well. that seems to remove any residue. i then give it a couple good coats of pecards and let that soak in over night and buff it one more time. i try to only use oil dyies, i had some real streaky and uneven color stuff going on and had to redo the seat and the p-pad.... so much for making much on this job!!! it also ran me out of roo lace and the 1/4" foam i use over the polymer inserts. i had just enough for the next seat and now i'll be wiating on foam to start that one ); Edited July 6, 2007 by beezachoppa Quote

JohnD Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 Wow, very nice Roger. My brother is waiting on me to do a softail seat for him. I noticed you don't do the seam in the back and I can't tell if there's one in the front, that most folks do. Your sides look real tight, is it better to leave the seam out? It actually looks like apholstery leather those sides are so smooth and tight. Outstanding work. Roger Posted July 7, 2007 Author Report Posted July 7, 2007 thanks for all the compliments guys!! john, you can do the side any way you choose. i have benn doing it in one pice for quite a while now. i think it is cleaner but, it does take quite a bit more leather! a seat this size takes around 9 square feet of leather and you waist the middle. i alway go for smooth tight sides. maybe it's the color on this one but, they all come out smooth and tight. i do have to go back and rework one now and then if it does not lay just right the first time around Quote
Members leathernut Posted July 7, 2007 Members Report Posted July 7, 2007 thumbs up roger, looks good.. Quote http://hellbentcustomseats.blogspot.com/
Contributing Member wolvenstien Posted July 7, 2007 Contributing Member Report Posted July 7, 2007 Roger, I am right there with David.... Waiting for a step by step how to..... LOL.... That seat looks simular enough to mine that I am sure the next one like it you do like it would make for a great how to.... and the passenger seat too.... LOL Great looking by the way... Roger Posted July 18, 2007 Author Report Posted July 18, 2007 thanks billy! i started the next seat and will post some pics start to finish. here is the last of this never ending job!!! i was glad to finally get it all boxed up last night and on it's way back!! having to re-do the seats really put me behind and quite a bit of material waisted. i would say it pushed me back a good ten days but, only the second time in 85 seats or so that i have had to start over so, i can't complain too much.
