whinewine Report post Posted July 23, 2007 (edited) On ebay is listed a leather splitting machine plus strap cutting machine for $169 + $20 shipping. It is being offered by Neel Saddlery under item ebay# 260141628261 (I can't seem to transfer the link via cut & paste, so here are the details). It is a buy it now deal. I've never heard of Neel Saddlery, nor do I know anything about this splitter. It reputedly skives 6" wide, but because the blade is itself 6" wide, I don't believe it & immediately became suspicious... I know the ones based on the Osborne #84 (like Craftool's current model based on it) are 'supposed' to be top notch, but I really don't know. What I am asking is: is this a good machine? a bad deal? a whole lot of trouble trying to keep the adjustments consistent from one split to the next? any & all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. russ h Edited July 23, 2007 by whinewine
The Major Report post Posted July 23, 2007 Russ, I bought one of Neel's splitters, and absolutely love it. It keeps the adjustments right where I need them. The people who run the outfit are top notch. Great people to deal with, this is one case where I can say don't let the price fool you. It is well worth it. Mine came with a strap cutter which in itself is a great little tool. And yes it can to a 6" piece.

Even though I love the splitter, it is difficult to skive a 5" by 5" )perhaps i should try skiving a 5" by 25" piece, more leverage and I'd be skiving five pieces at once) piece of chrome tan or veg tan. I've been wondering if a an 8" skiver modeled on the Osborne 84 would do the job. Tandy has them for $299.
