Getting Rid of Smell in Leather

Recommended Posts

Asking for a friend, who has just acquired a saddle that reeks of rat pee: anyone know how to get rid of the smell?

Uhm, gross.

I'm just spit balling here but I wonder if you hosed it down and scrubbed it with a brush and some saddle soap and then oiled it if that would do something to displace the rat pee smell. Sunlight may help some too but will likely darken the leather too. Maybe using Sno-Seal or NFO/beeswax and just stuff it and stuff it and stuff it will force out the pee?

I dunno. I want to see if anyone has any other ideas.

I had a hide that smelled awful.  Didn't think I would be able to use it for anything.  Scrubbed it with liquid saddle soap, sprayed on, really wet, rinsed it off under running water.  Then treated it with oxalic acid.  That fixed it so the foul urine like smell was gone and the hide was usable.  So try the saddle soap first like battlemunky says and see how it goes.  If that doesn't do it, then may oxalic acid, but it will bleach the leather.

Thanks! I just found out the urine isn't actually IN the leather. It was just the saddle was stored in the same room as the rats were kept (in cages.)

They used the rats for the sport of barn hunting: seeing how fast a dog can sniff out rats that are hidden in a barn, under hay bales, etc!
