Members Smd1973 Posted December 5, 2018 Members Report Posted December 5, 2018 Looking to split a leather belt tab so I can insert a piece of cotton webbing into it. I’d like the split to be about 1.5” deep into the tab and then reverse the tab out of the machine. Will a hand crank splitter like a Master Tools splitter accomplish this? I’ve been looking on YouTube but I haven’t seen anyone reverse a piece of leather out of the splitter. Everything I see only shows a piece of leather being fully split. Anyone have any advice? Thank you! Quote
Members JazzBass Posted December 5, 2018 Members Report Posted December 5, 2018 I found this to be brilliant - no splitter required!! Not sure if it fits your purpose, but you'll love it anyway Quote
bikermutt07 Posted December 5, 2018 Report Posted December 5, 2018 Not sure what you mean by reversing it out of the machine? Any one of the standard skiver splitters can do what is called a tapered skive. The hand crank machines are made specifically for splitting the whole piece. As jazzbass pointed out...... Knife skills can accomplish a lot of different work. Quote
Members rodneywt1180b Posted December 5, 2018 Members Report Posted December 5, 2018 Are you making a cotton webbing belt with leather ends? 1 1/2 inches isn't very far. If it's thick veg tan you should be able to get reasonable results with a sharp utility knife and a little patience. Just watch your fingers. Another way would be to use a thinner leather on both sides of the webbing. Maybe add a middle layer so the leather doesn't have a big bump where it covers the webbing. No splitting required and you can have the smooth side out on both sides. Quote
