identify this old singer machine

Recommended Posts

Hello quite new to the forum, friend of mine had an old singer that i suspect is for leatherwork and gave it to me to restore it. been trying to give her some love but could use a bobin to test her out and need to first identify what model it is.

Pretty sure its a model 18 no clue wich one or how to tell, and where im from seems like nobody uses this machine. i got a serial id number G7042827. and got me some pics of this poor fellow as well if it helps IDing le john doe.

Singer 18 - left stand version of the Singer 17. If it has no tag compare the parts list of the class 18 machines. The details will lead you to the subclass I guess.

18 is left handed version of 17? Thought 17 was just an older pre 1900 machine. Its def a left handed machine altho it ONLY comes with a back end wheel and no side wheel.

These are leather machines correct? Industrial type? I own a 29k how do would you compare those 2 models? Think the 29k is far from idustrial

G- 7042401 7043400 18 1000 May 13 1919

This is your S/N, class type -18, units made (1000) and the month and year it was made May 13 1919

Yes as Folker said it is a Singer 18- which shares some parts with the 17-. you might find some parts here.http://www.ebaystores.com/SHARP-SEWING-SUPPLIES__W0QQ_sacatZLKQ51onlineQQ_sidZ304381499?submit.x=73&submit.y=9&LH_TitleDesc=1&_nkw=singer& the needle bar should be the same as the 17. the chinese roller feet do not work very well with this as they are not centered. you would have to tinker with them. If i can remember the shuttle is the same for the 18 and the 17 also.

Yes the class 18- is left handed and were used for sewing the vamps of shoes. the class 17- is the right hand version and were made probably until 1980´s. They are industrial machines for light to medium leather the same as the 29k which is also for light to medium leather. The 29k is a shoe patcher, for repairing shoes and boots etc..

Eres Español Carlos?? hay muchos 18´s en españa??

.1k  made, i Guess it makes sense the low avalability compared to the 29k spam. Any reason for such a low production number. So they both can do the same? 29k and 18 model? Would like to sew with a thicker thread i thought 18 looked like it could deal with a bit more then 29k patcher. Shame, Will look for 17 18 parts then, quick Google search tells me the japanese makers have an identical machine i can use for parts

Sorry Jimmy not Spanish. Portuguese. Hardly any 18 but funny enough dude who Gave me this 1 owns 3 of these from her grandmother. She had people check the machines but nobody identified or bought them. They look pretty bad from get go but just a bit of love and they shine through. I cant bear to watch them lay there and die, such nice pieces of machines its a crime what people do to them

1000 made in May 1919, Have a look down the list for the class 18 and the amount made? this is only with the letter g, then look for ones with another letter before the serial number, i am sure there are more.

oh that makes a lot more sense, 1k made sounds like a failed attempt at a model, or a rly low amount of left handed people sewing shoes. i will look into the needle plate serial, still polishing the rods haven't checked the id]s yet. just not at home atm so cant confirm. ty so much for the help jimi. what a life saver, a new bobbin and the tension plate system and ill get it up and running once again.  The machine thanks you :)

2nd look at part list i think its an 18-2. If by needle plate you mean the throat plate i got 16095 plate that seems to only come with the 18-2 model :). Finally found it. Just says Shoe work purpose not much info there, and a left drop feed unlike the 18-1 right drop feed. looks like a really nice machine

Yes it looks like a 18-2 from the throat plate and like you said the drop feed on the left side. I have one in a box somewhere as i have little space at the moment and looks just the same. The only problem is if you wanted to use it with a treadle you would need the original as it is for left hand only?
