chriscraft Report post Posted January 22, 2019 I bought a small lot of pre 1963 CRAFTOOL CO. tooling saddle stamps today. Seller had a small shoe box with other random leather working hand tools. This Craftool Co. mallet caught my attention and I bought it. Turns out, the black end caps are removable and house two 2oz. lead weights. One on each side. I’ve never seen anything like this and can only assume one could remove the lead weight if you wanted to make it lighter. Pretty cool idea. I have some Craftool catalogs from the late 1950’s and it’s not listed in there. Wondering when these were available and for how long.

buzzardbait Report post Posted January 22, 2019 those had different weights so you could change the weight of the mallet. the plastic face doesn't hold up very well over time. I see them on E-bay from time to time. I have bought and sold several of them. The wedge that holds the head on is usually missing.
chriscraft Report post Posted January 22, 2019 Can you post a picture of the different weights? Do you know how many different size weights originally came with it? These lead weights have a casting of 2OZ on them. It came with one weight on each side. Seller is local and I may be able to find out if they have the rest of the parts. Since the black plastic end caps may be brittle, I won’t use it then.
buzzardbait Report post Posted January 23, 2019 I don't have any photos. I bought one years ago on E-bay that was in the original box, it had 6 weights and extra end caps. I don't know how much of it was originally in the set I do remember the weights were not all the same.
