Looking for spring mechanisms.

I need something relatively small (probably no bigger than an inch wide and a couple inches long) that can be riveted to leather. The idea is to push a piece upwards or outwards once tension has been released.

Sorry, I am not sure what you are trying to achieve. Is this some type of buckle or strap attachment? A pic can be worth a 1000 words.

If metal then you are looking for spring steel..try the steel bands that are used to attach things to pallets..you can cut a piece off , they come in various widths..you are going to have to put it inside a leather sheath, ( you'll have to make it ) they are sharp..file the edges anyway..
