Rocky101101 Report post Posted September 5, 2019 Hi all, I would like to start a motorcycle panniers project, I have seen that 7-9 oz leather is recommended. I have seen some chrome tan in the color I want but it is only 6-7oz ..could I glue an other additional hide to make up the difference on the reverse? is it practical,?? would it effect the overall temper??. If it is possible would it have to be chrome tan the same or could I use veg tan (I have thought of dyeing natural 7-9oz veg tan)but the color is not available anywhere and I am not sure I could do it proficiently if it was ) sorry if this is a basic query but I really would like the info ... thankx in advance. Dwight Report post Posted September 5, 2019 The difference between 6/7 and 8/9 is at the very least 1/64th of an inch, . . . and at the very greatest, . . . 3/64ths of an inch. You can have some success adding 3 oz leather, . . . but not much of anything any thinner. Remember that each "oz" is 1/64th of an inch, . . . take a pair of calipers to the store where you buy the leather, . . . measure the pieces and get one of the thicker ones. That would be my solution, . . . other than using the 6/7 an using several coats of resolene to stiffen up the final product. May God bless, Dwight

Did you look in the motorcycle sub section? There are people who specialize in motorcycle leather. Most chrome tan leather would be to flimsy for bags I would think. If you glued 3oz veg tan to the back side it would firm it up and give you the “body” for the chrome tan to hold its shape better. And I’d put Aussie,Sno Seal or the like on the veg tan to help make it more water resistant.
