what kind of leather is this?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I purchased this leather hide from a random seller on ebay to make wallets. I love it, and would like to find more just like it. The temper and thickness is what I am after, dont care about the color. I've googled "hard temper", "stiff temper" and "thin and stiff leather" etc. but I'm not finding it sold anywhere. I'm 90% sure it's a low quality or upholstery leather. Definitely leather though, not faux. Any help greatly appreciated!

Why not ask the seller ? Even when you buy from "a random seller on Ebay" you have their details..their name or their business name, and they send you an invoice..Even if you have lost the paper invoice, log back into your Ebay account and the transaction details are there.

@Mikesc, I did. Unfortunately he said he has no idea, it was in a storage crate he purchased on auction.

Ah..OK..so firstly..are you sure it is not a synthetic..burn a small piece with a lighter..synthetic burns differently to organic, gives off a different smell, chars differently if you bring it into contact with a flame on the edge..I didn't say the differences deliberately, don't want to influence your senses..

yes, I am sure it is real leather.

Albeit, not a premium hide for sure. But STILL!!! What is it? low grade? utility? bicast or bonded? I just want to find out the terminology. I have a lot of small projects in mind that would work great with this very thin and stiff leather. Just don't know how to find more!

Take a piece into a leather retailer, to ask if they can identify it and/or supply the same product.
