Project idea's for thin leather

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, I am new here and have been poking around for a bit. I see there is a lot of very talented folks on here and I appreciate everybody's contribution!

Anyhow, I recently purchased (by accident) some very thin 0.6mm or 1.5oz but very beautiful leather. The problem is that I am not sure what to do with it! I believe its too thin to make a wallet of any sort. I am fairly new to the craft and thought I would ask you experts what your thoughts are? I have provided a picture below for reference.

I also have a few sides of some other really soft veg tanned leather that I am not sure what I want to do with quite yet. The problem for me is that its just too soft and not firm enough to make anything I am used to making, plus I cannot burnish the edges as its not firm enough. I would love your thoughts on this as well if possible. I have also provided a picture of this as well. My apologies for the lame questions here, like I said I am pretty new to this and thought it would be great to hear what ideas you all may have.

Thanks in advance everyone, any and all ideas are very welcomed!

You could make a card  holder, like this:http://djole.altervista.org/djole/Publications/Leather/HelenaCardCase/HCardCase.htm

I used thin pigskin for the pockets, and it's as thin as, or thinner, than the leather you have up there.
It's a good project for practicing leatherworking skills, too.

Use the thin stuff to line the soft stuff: then wallets, purse, clutch, book covers etc

For either leather you could make cushions for hard chairs, or cover existing ones

Reinforce clothing, especially the elbows. This conjures up images of an English academic in his favourite old tweed jacket, but you could do jeans or similar clothes that take hard wear. or applique for fashion (can you tell I was a young man in the 1970s?!)

Nigel Armitage has a video called 'How to make a simple handmade wallet', or some similar title; Search YouTube and you'll find it. In it he lines a wallet with thin leather - deerskin I think, but yours would be OK. He uses a leather press, but you'll get the same result with a piece of wood & a pile of books, you just have to leave it longer

Simple drawstring pouches?

Soft cases/covers for photographic & similar equipment & instruments

Tool rolls. Probably not for heavy things like carpentry, but for drawing instruments, precision & instrument technicians tools - or your own leather tools

Search YouTube for 'spoon carving', 'wood carving' and 'chip carving'  - tool rolls/sheaths/blade covers ( Chip carving is carving on the surface of wood)

Finally, there are no lame questions on here, that's what forums are for

Edit - I've just Searched YouTube for 'wood carving tool roll' and there are several examples. You could also make a strop to fit each one, but from firmer leather, say 2mm veg tan

Thanks for the input everybody, I was thinking of crafting a wallet with the thin stuff however I don't want to waste the leather so decided against it. I think I may use it for wallet interiors as suggestion, that sounds like my best bet.

As for the soft stuff, I may do a few notepad cases out of it. Hand stitching this stuff is a bit difficult for me, as using a stitching iron just doesn't work the same as it does with the more firm stuff. The holes close in much fast and it stretches much more. The good news is that I have a beautiful Singer 15-88 coming to me late this week. I look forward to playing with this new toy!
