catsmith Report post Posted November 3, 2019 Had surgery on my foot two weeks ago. Can't put pressure on it for two more weeks. Good part is I got a knee scooter. The grandkids love the scooter! On the other hand, I was stuck in a recliner for the first week. Plenty of time to go bat poop crazy. So leather work it is! My latest toy is a Colt 1911 Wylie Clapp Edition. So new leather was needed. 6-7 oz leather, Hand stitched with split artificial sinew, moccasin brown dye and the only other thing I put on my holsters is 3 layers of Sno Proof melted in to seal everything. I am definitely function over form with my leatherwork. I am always open to constructive criticism.

Hildebrand Report post Posted November 3, 2019 Nice work. Only negative I would comment on is generally you don’t want to cover the mag release, possibility of accidentally pushing it on reholstering exists. Todd
JLSleather Report post Posted November 3, 2019 (edited) I might want a tad heavier leather for that one myself, mostly due to the broad piece you have as a sweat guard. Those single-layer flaps tend to get ... flappy. 9 hours ago, Hildebrand said: generally you don’t want to cover the mag release, possibility of accidentally pushing it Ya always hear that. But seems nobody wants to discuss the "possibility of accidentally pushing it" if it's NOT covered Edited November 3, 2019 by JLSleather
wizard of tragacanth Report post Posted November 3, 2019 That's a nice looking combo. The holster matches the gun. Love those Wiley Clapp editions! I agree with JLS that I would go with a heavier leather, like 8/9/10 oz leather for a gun of this size and weight. It appears the the back panel of leather impinges on one's ability to get a full firing grip on the handle. The front panel looks just fine, in that regard. I would suggest trimming out that little triangular piece that can be seen peeking out by the trigger guard, when the holster is viewed from the front. This may be of no importance to you and I am talking purely about aesthetics here, but it looks like the belt slots could be cleaned up a little. I can see a little bump in the transition between the punched holes and where the slot was cut out. Wrap some 150 grit sandpaper around a paint stir stick or similarly flat tool, and smooth those out, then dye and burnish the slots. Not necessary at all however. nick

Large enough that the mag release wouldn't make contact with leather in any situation. One might also press in a sort of open ended bubble that would isolate that area.
