I want to learn how to duplicate this braiding technique for a vintage bag that I own, to replace the straps.  Has anyone ever seen this before?

That looks like something the whip-makers would braid. I am guessing it is braided over a core. There are some examples in the Braiding section on this website.

I like how the braid matches the background work.... fortuitous or planned?
